WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- House Minority Leader John Boehner on Sunday lashed out against spending in Washington, saying it’s putting more debt on Americans in the future.
Boehner (R., Ohio) appeared on ABC’s “This Week” and criticized “the spending spree” continuing in Washington.
“It’s just putting more debt on the backs of our kids and our grandkids,” he said.
His remarks came after the White House Saturday sent a letter to Boehner and other Capitol Hill lawmakers calling for swift action to help U.S. small businesses and address state and local government budget cuts. “It is essential that we continue to explore additional measures to spur job creation and build momentum toward recovery, even as we establish a path to long-term fiscal discipline,” the letter said.
Boehner said, “The American people want spending cut now.”
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) acknowledged there is spending fatigue around the country. “People are concerned about the debt level, and we are, as well,” Hoyer said on “This Week.” “But clearly, you cannot not continue to stimulate an economy that is still struggling to get out of the deep ditch that we found it in about 18 months ago.”
Hoyer and Boehner also predicted the outcome of the 2010 midterm elections for the House.
“History says we’re going to lose a few seats, but we’re going to retain the House,” Hoyer said. “We’re going to keep the House.”
As for Boehner, he said, “We’ve got a hundred seats in play. We’ve got a real shot at winning the majority so that we can put a check on this administration and all the spending that’s out of control here in Washington, D.C.”
