Jasminne asks where the computer desk light be positioned to avoid glare as she’s getting a lot of headaches from using the computer.

As if headaches and eye strain aren’t enough, computer glare can also cause back problems as people sit in awkward positions for sustained periods of time or twist around to try and avoid it.

So how do you eliminate glare? Here are some tips to help correct the problem:

1) First, make sure you have the right lighting. You should not be using task lighting for computer work. Instead, you want to light your computer work space with diffuse, reflected light. See this photo of how light should be placed for computer work from Chris Adams (About.com Ergonomics).

2 ) Position your computer monitor correctly. Your work surface should be placed at a right angle to any direct light source (such as a window) so it gives the least amount of reflections and glare.

3) Get a glass glare filter or upgrade your monitor. CRT monitors inherently give off glare; if you have one of these, you can get a glare filter to put over the screen. Flat panel LCD monitors are much less prone to glare so if you don’t have one, you may want to upgrade.
